Bulgaria is a country with thousands of years of history and a cultural heritage that embraces ancient civilizations, such as the Thracian, Roman and Old Bulgarian. Unique archaeological sites abound throughout the country; ancient settlement mounds from the Neolithic age, Thracian sanctuaries and tombs, remains of Roman cities, Byzantine and Medieval fortresses, churches and monasteries, among many others. Archaeological finds in Bulgaria include huge Thracian gold hoards and Thracian tombs with stunning architecture and frescoes, also Roman theatres and Greek colonial towns on the Black sea coast. Bulgaria has some 40,000 archaeological and historical sites, seven of which are included on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites (see here) and a further ten are on the tentative list.
