Italy is a treasure trove of ancient ruins. The country has a unique cultural legacy shaped over many centuries by the interaction between the native inhabitants and a host of incomers who all left their mark on the architecture, art and language of the country.
There are considerable remnants of the Roman Empire all over Italy, most notably in Rome itself but each region offers its own unique historical treasures.
